St Albans District Council contacted me earlier this year to cover the Street Finale at the St Albans & Harpenden Food & Drink Festival 2016. The event was a huge success last year and, this year again, we were all hoping for sunshine on the day. After a very rainy Saturday we were delighted to get a beautiful afternoon on Sunday 2nd October and I spent a few hours capturing the atmosphere on St Peters Street.
Having the high street closed to traffic really transformed the city centre and gave it a brilliant party vibe. The red bus from Dylans Kings Arms was a huge hit, I even managed to climb on the top deck to get a shot from the open roof top!
Further down the high street, a great variety of food stalls (my choice for the day was a melt-in-the-mouth pulled pork bun from Smokey Mac BBQ), the bicycle-powered Deliveroo stage with live music and a “Village Green” area complete with grass and deck chairs.
Radio Verulam were there to cover the event, including live broadcasts of cookery demonstrations from the “Chef’s Theatre” on Market Place. They allowed me to sneak into the demo stage where Christo Tofalli from Ye Olde Fighting Cocks was cooking up a storm.
Oaklands College educated us on the provenance of meat with livestock pens (cute little piggies) and live butchery demonstrations, eek!
All in all, a wonderful day for all ages, and if you weren’t there, try not to miss it next year!
